3.1 Cold Insulation

Cold insulation systems are defined as insulation systems for pipelines and equipment that operate below ambient temperatures.

Cold insulation is required for:
  • Thermal conservation of pipelines or equipment to conserve refrigeration (limit heat gain)
  • To limit surface condensation and icing
  • To limit boil-off
Cold insulation systems shall be water vapour tight.

Pre-Insulation System for Pipe Insulation

Harvest pre-insulation pipe system is an innovative solution for complex pipeline insulation — the principle is like 3D printing. Particularly suitable for LNG, liquefied gases and petrochemical plants, especially for jetty straight pipelines. Most installation is finished at the workshop.

3.2 Hot Insulation

Hot insulation systems are insulation systems for pipelines and equipment that operate above ambient temperatures.

Hot insulation is required for:
  • 1
Thermal conservation of equipment and piping if economically justified
  • 2
Temperature control of processes or products (e.g. to avoid solidification or too high viscosity — possibly combined with trace heating)
  • 3
Personnel protection on surfaces with temperature of 250°C (482°F) or higher. Between 60°C and 250°C, open mesh guards are preferably used

Removable Insulation Blanket

Removable insulation blanket installed on valve — custom shaped for complex geometry

Removable Blanket — Valve Application

Reusable and easy to remove for maintenance access
Customized to fit complex geometries and equipment shapes
High-temperature rated materials
Suitable for valves, flanges, expansion joints, and instruments

3.3 Personnel Protection

Mesh Guard for Personnel Protection

For piping and equipment operating between 60°C and 250°C, open mesh guards are the preferred personnel protection method. Mesh guards allow air circulation while preventing accidental contact with hot surfaces.

Temperature Range
60°C (140°F) — 250°C (482°F)
Above 250°C
Full thermal insulation with cladding required
Open mesh guard installed on hot pipe — stainless steel mesh preventing personnel contact with 60-250°C surface

Applications

Process piping in plant areas with personnel access
Valve stations and manifolds
Heat exchangers and pressure vessels
Steam distribution systems

3.5 Cladding

Aluminum and stainless steel metal cladding on insulated pipe rack — industrial plant environment

Metal Cladding

Aluminum and stainless steel cladding systems protect insulation from mechanical damage, UV radiation, water ingress, and CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation).

Aluminum cladding — lightweight, corrosion resistant
Stainless steel — high-temperature and aggressive environments
Custom profiles for pipe, vessel, and equipment
Sealed joints to prevent moisture ingress
GRP (glass reinforced polymer) cladding on insulated pipe — marine and offshore application

GRP Cladding

Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) cladding provides a superior outer jacket for insulation systems in marine and offshore applications — inherently corrosion-resistant, ideal for high-humidity and splash zone environments.

Corrosion-free — no risk of CUI beneath GRP
Excellent UV resistance — no painting required
Lightweight compared to metal alternatives
